Instructions

- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In another bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla until smooth. Gradually mix into dry ingredients until just combined.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans (add orange food coloring to one if desired).
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on wire racks.
- For frosting, beat softened butter with powdered sugar until fluffy; mix in orange zest.
- Once cakes are cool, layer them with frosting in between and coat the entire cake with remaining frosting.
