Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large sweet onion
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs or panko
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp horseradish sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the onion by slicing off half an inch from the top and peeling the outer layer. Place it root side down and carefully cut downwards at an angle to create petal shapes.
- Set up three bowls: mix flour and cornstarch in one, combine beaten eggs and milk in another, and mix bread crumbs with spices in the third.
- Coat the onion by first dipping it into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally rolling it in the spiced bread crumbs until fully covered.
- Heat oil in a large pot to 375?F (190?C). Carefully lower the coated onion into hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown.
- Drain excess oil on paper towels. In a separate bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and horseradish for the dipping sauce. Serve warm.
